Enchanting and glamorous - nobody can resist the allure of Evelyn Hugo!
I picked up this novel after I named Daisy Jones and The Six as my favorite book read in 2018 and Taylor Jenkins Reid did not disappoint. I am always in awe of Reid's ability to write stories that make fictional people and stories so damn realistic. Just like what I found with Daisy, Evelyn was so real and human I kept finding myself believing that she was a real celebrity.
The story follows Monique, an unknown magazine reporter, who one day gets a call and has been asked for by name from an A-list celebrity, the glamorous and house-hold name Evelyn Hugo. Monique is confused but excited by the movie start choosing her to write her biography.
The storyline splits between Evelyn describing her incredible and shocking life and Monique going over the interactions in her mind and applying Evelyn's life advice to her own shambled life. Evelyn's up and down life takes the reader on a rollercoaster of emotions and soon you find yourself sneaking in a few pages whenever you have a spare moment. Plus the bombshell that Evelyn drops at the end is not to be missed!
My thoughts: I fell in love with all the characters in this book. My heart ached for Evelyn in parts where she did what she had to do in order to survive and make the best life for herself moving forward. I usually am let down by boring or iffy female main characters but Evelyn did not disappoint. She was just a woman trying to make it in a man's world and find a place where she felt like she belonged. Enter her best friend and the great love of her life and the story only accelerates from there.
I felt like I was on board the life journey with Evelyn as she battled to put herself and loved ones first and reaching out a hand to take what she deserved! What a badass but still so full of class!
My heart broke in places and I was close to tears when life threw Evelyn for a loop. My god what an emotional journey this story was and the life teachings Reid included are applicable to many. This story has a lot of romance in it, as well as touching on topics of domestic abuse and LGBT+ issues but Reid includes it so tastefully, it really adds another whole level to this incredible novel.
I am positive I will be rereading this book in the future alongside the book that first put me onto this author Daisy Jones and The Six. This author CAN WRITE. A book full of description and emotion - I am still in awe that Reid has the power to make these characters so human and she writes differently than any other author I've ever read.
A real pleasure to read and I will for sure be picking up every book with Reid's name on it from now on.
