Frost proves time and time again that she is a master storyteller - one who is able to breathe fresh life into a story we've heard before but yet enthralls us as if it is the first time.
This book is a retelling of Frost's One Foot in the Grave but told from Bones' point of view (POV). The story follows Bones' hunt to find Cat after she's disappeared leaving nothing but a note and what happens once he does find her after all those years apart. The reader is granted a deeper look inside Bones' mind and gets to experience the story from a different perspective lined with the thoughts and emotions of a 200+ year old vampire.
Bravo! Jeaniene has done it again - another spectacular book. I am enthralled by this retelling of the original series, it is such a fun way to relive the original story but from a completely different point of view. This is what Stephanie Meyers was trying to do with Midnight Sun - but Frost is a master and gave a love story retelling with a POV swap SO MUCH BETTER.
Hearing the story from Bones' POV (with a few changes here and there) makes the reader feel like they are hearing much of the tale for the first time. You get to know Bones on a deeper level and learn more about his emotions and past history - gosh it makes me love him even more! I'm thrilled that Jeaniene is continuing on in rewriting the stories from Bones' perspective - keep going because the readers are loving it!
I will say, this story was much more agonizing than Cat's. She was more focused on her job and leaving her team, with only fleeting thoughts of Bones as she tried to move on with her life. However, Bones was consumed with the need to find Cat. It painted a much darker picture. He truly suffered more than her I feel like, which wasn't far to him at all. It was definitely more upsetting to fully understand how much effort Bones put into finding Cat, even at the expense of valuable friendships like Charles, and it wasn't as simple as he'd made it seem by just showing up at Denise & Randy's wedding.
Throughout this story, readers got to see how much Bones sacrifices and does for Cat. He truly is a spectacular hero - super swoon-worthy! But it particularly illuminated the fact that he loves her more than I think she loves him. That's just my own opinion, but I think this book can serve as some decent evidence.
Also I read this book by listening to it as an audiobook, so I need to comment on the audiobook itself - I've listened to only one other of Frost's books on audio (it was one of Ian's stories) but this audiobook was so much better! The narrator nailed Bones' voice in my head and he did amusing accents for other characters. Honestly, it was probably the best audiobook narration I've ever heard (as Ian's book kinda put me off audiobooks since I didn't like the narrator) - so I was worried at first but soon discovered this audiobook is a fantastic production.
So I say again, bravo to Jeaniene for writing these retellings even when some people told her 'nobody would be interested in that' - well they were wrong because this book was top notch. Frost proves time and time again that she is a master storyteller - one who is able to breathe fresh life into a story we've heard before but yet enthralls us as if it is the first time.
